The Oscars Are Bullsh*t

with 6 comments

We don’t pretend to be the authority on all things corny Hollywood; but we do know great acting when we see it. This year, the geeks who pick the Oscar nominees saw fit to pull off another caper: snubbing one of the best actors of our time, Denzel Washington. Denzel Washington as Frank LucasApparently, his starring role as Frank Lucas in American Gangster wasn’t Oscar worthy, just like they didn’t see fit to nominate him for The Great Debators, John Q or Malcolm X (there are more, but we’ll save you the time).

The salt in the wound is that not only was he snubbed, those in forgettable roles or movies were nominated. Like who you ask? Who qualifies as forgettable? Well, one of the more egregious examples would be the nomination of some guy named Viggo Mortenson. I know, I said the same thing – who? Apparently his performance in some movie called Eastern Promises fit the bill to get him nominated for best actor.

What’s that you say? I know who he is? Who else have you got? How about Daniel Day Lewis being nominated for his role in some movie called There Will Be Blood. We have to admit, we didn’t see the movie, but we definitely saw the trailer – it leaves much to be desired.

While I’m sure both Lewis and Mortenson are good actors, they aren’t anywhere close to the stature and talent of a Denzel Washington. That’s like giving the NBA MVP award to Steve Nash when Kobe Bryant is clearly the best player in the league – oh wait, that happened too.

I’m putting out an A.P.B. to all police officers: arrest those who pick Oscar nominees, they need to be brought up on charges immediately. It should be noted that Washington’s co-star Ruby Dee, who played his mother in the film, was nominated for best supporting actress. Save yourself the trouble this year of watching some boring, 3 hour-long award show.

This photo was pulled off the news wires, and is widely reported to be a preview of the 2008 Oscars:

What do you think?
